Founded 1913

Cheshire's James Thompson Lodge 3653

Becoming a Mason is an initial step to ongoing teaching and traditional ceremonies dating back in our lodge to 1913.

Refining the man that you know you already are, whilst enjoying good company and proper fellowship, all underpinned by charitable works and family values at the very heart of what we do.

Integrity

Freemasons of today focus on building themselves as people of integrity.

Joining James Thompson Lodge provides that structure to help achieve these goals.

Friendship

James Thompson Lodge 3653 excels at guiding new Masons through every stage of lodge life.

You're not just getting to know Masons on the way, but also new friends.

Respect

Freemasonry is always based around the respect you deserve.

James Thompson Lodge always places every member as an equal.

Service

Masons as a whole are one of the biggest contributors to charity in the UK.

We don't shout about it, we just help. Last year the Masons around the UK gave away £42 million pounds alone.

What We Do

The importance of improvement, setting an example, and shouldering responsibility for the future, are our Masonic goals. And where will it all end? In brotherhood and friendship. What we build today will endure.

"You Feel Welcome Straight Away!"

I initially felt slightly intimidated about joining such a prestigious institution as James Thompson Lodge 3653, in Birkenhead, but my concerns quickly melted away. After my initial email, I then got a follow-up brief phone call and I was warmly invited to meet with some senior members. Their welcoming nature and casual approach immediately put me at ease. Looking back, I couldn't have chosen a better lodge than James Thompson Lodge 3653.

In fact, my only regret is not having taken this step years ago.

Masonic Values

A Moral Code

Our Birkenhead Masonic lodge and Freemasons as a whole, believe in honour and that a man has a responsibility to behave honourably in everything he does. Freemasonry teaches its members the principles of personal decency and personal responsibility. It hopes to inspire them to have charity and goodwill toward all mankind, and to translate principles and convictions into action.

Charity

Our Masonic lodge strives to help the community with our charity donations and much more. We, as are all Masons, are always devoted to the promotion of the welfare and happiness of all mankind. Freemasonry as a whole teaches its members that unselfishness is a duty and that it's not only more blessed to give than to receive, but also more rewarding.

Education

Freemasonry teaches a system of morality and brotherhood by the use of symbols and dramatic presentations. It encourages its members to expand their knowledge of the world around them. At James Thompson Lodge 3653 in Birkenhead, we encourage Masonic community and companionship to help you learn every step of the way.

Faith

Freemasons uphold the principle of universal brotherhood guided by a divine creator. While not a religion itself, Freemasonry only asks that members believe in a Supreme Being according to their own personal faith. The organisation remains non-denominational, showing no preference for any particular religious tradition. Masonic rituals and ceremonies communicate ethical principles using fundamental concepts shared across various faiths.

Social Responsibility

Freemasonry champions truth, justice, friendship, and charitable giving. We value civil liberties and thoughtful discourse. Members are encouraged to be good citizens who respect the laws of their communities while building meaningful connections with one another. We believe in making a positive difference together in a spirit of goodwill.

Non Political

One of the first rules of Freemasonry forbids the discussion in Masonic meetings of religious matters and politics — topics likely to cause personal arguments. It's also against the fundamental principles of Freemasonry for Masonic organisations to take political action or attempt to influence elections or legislation.

Equality Among Members

Freemasonry regards no man for his worldly wealth, social status, or outward appearance. Kings, princes and sultans have been Masons. So have office workers, bin-men, factory workers, and fast-food fry cooks. Once invited to join, even on your first day, you're standing tall, as an equal, with the collective Masons of James Thompson Lodge 3653.

Women In Freemasonry

The United Grand Lodge of England's relationship with women in Freemasonry has evolved significantly in recent decades. While UGLE maintains its tradition as a fraternal organisation for men, it officially recognises the Order of Women Freemasons and the Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons (now known as Freemasonry for Women) as regular Masonic bodies.

These women's Grand Lodges practise English Masonic ritual with remarkable fidelity, maintaining the same three Craft degrees and upholding identical landmarks and Ancient Charges. English women Freemasons participate in their own lodges throughout the United Kingdom, often sharing facilities with male lodges and collaborating on charitable endeavours.

Though maintaining separate governance structures, UGLE's formal recognition represents a significant acknowledgement of women's legitimate place within the broader English Masonic family, preserving tradition while embracing the valuable contributions women make to Masonic principles and practice.
